Hi friends,
Happy Tuesday!
On a zoom call with a friend last week, she mentioned that she’s having a hard time making a morning routine to stick to. When I asked her what her priority was she said the word “health”. She then continued to break the word health into physical, mental, spiritual health.
To satisfy all those “priorities”, she said that she needed to do yoga, journaling, meditation, read and eat. As an emergency nurse, I told her that’s not how “priority” works.
Prioritizing means doing one thing that you deem is the most important for you.
What does this have to do with non-negotiables? These are the things that you commit yourself to do no matter what. These are things you do for yourself. Things that you enjoy doing so that you can show up in life the way that you want to.
Right now, my non-negotiable consist of this: wake up, drink water, make my bed, brush my teeth, and do yoga. This takes about 40 minutes from the moment I wake up.
It’s not bad as for a dedicated to my well-being.
Why does this matter?
Once I’m done with my routine, I feel as if I’ve achieved all the things I wanted to do for that day. It doesn’t matter how the rest of the day goes. It still feels like my day is complete. Even though technically, it just started.
Because I’m intentional about my actions, I am more productive during the day. I’m aware of where my day goes. For me, that’s really important.
I ask you again, what are your non-negotiables?
How to apply this (if you like):
If you don’t currently have a morning routine, track your current routine from the moment you wake up and see what you’d like to change.
Slowly replace one "bad" habit with a good one. Instead of reaching out for your phone, drink a glass of water.
Pay attention to your use of social media - for me, I made it a rule that unless I’ve created something (blog post, newsletter, or any content), then I can’t consume anything online.
I was never a fan of routines before, but now I see why they’re so important. I don’t have a morning routine. I just have a wake-up routine. I do this right after I wake up regardless of what time. Most days I wake up at 10 am, and sometimes I wake up at 12 pm. Either way, my list is non-negotiable.
If this post was helpful or unhelpful in some ways let me know. Reach out if you have any questions, I’d love to hear your thoughts!
Lots of love,
Jerine
