Are you upper limiting? I know I am
On how upper limiting works, living in a permissionless era, big win on YouTube
Hi friends & new subscribers,
Is your 2022 going well as you've been hoping?
Mine certainly isn't.
Or at least, that's what my brain is telling me. Ever since I've been self-employed, I've been having many self-limiting beliefs. (Who isn't these days?)
It's been harder to show up more confidently online as I feel discouraged by my self-doubts.
So this week, I want to talk about the topic of upper limiting.
How Upper Limiting Works
Have you ever found yourself in a situation where everything is going well, and suddenly you feel like it's too good to be true, so you do something to mess it up?
Yeah, that's called an upper limit behaviour.
Coined by Gay Hendricks in his book, "The Big Leap," the upper limit problem happens when you believe that you have a maximum threshold for happiness.
When your happiness level goes above the threshold, your brain can't handle it, so it does something called self-sabotage and brings it back down.
Most of these self-sabotaging behaviours are unconscious.
I've been upper limiting myself by constantly worrying, doubting my capabilities, not feeling like I have enough money and imagining getting fired by my clients.
Like I said, self-sabotage. But how do I know I'm upper limiting?
I know because there's no external evidence for my worries. For example, getting fired by my clients is unnecessary since most of my interactions with my clients have been positive.
Worrying about an unlikely situation is a huge waste of energy.
So, how do you overcome upper limiting?
You overcome it by getting used to being happier.
For example, if your usual happiness level is around 6, learn how to increase it to 7 (on a scale of 0 - 10). Then, you learn to be comfortable being happy at a 7 without self-sabotage. You can do this by learning to shift your internal state to either neutral or positive feelings.
Positive feelings can look like gratitude, abundance and peace.
The more you get used to tolerating your newfound happiness, the more you can learn to increase your happiness level.
Here are the steps to release your upper limiting behaviour (adapted from Gay Hendricks’ book):
Recognize that you're upper limiting
Drop the upper limiting symptom (i.e. worry, anxiety or negative thought)
Recognize that positivity that the universe wants to show you
Repeat this throughout your day-to-day life
This is easier said than done, of course.

🤔 A question for you this week:
What self-limiting behaviours have you noticed you've been doing? How can you let go of those thoughts that no longer serve you?

I don't think I've heard of upper limiting before 😮 Now I can be aware of when I do it, I sometimes do expect something to go wrong when things are 'feeling right'.
