💌 How I used a scary situation to give me clarity
On soulful creation, giving things for free to make money, and pre-launch for a video course :)
Hey friends & new subscribers,
Greetings from Punta Cana!
The Dominican Republic has a special place in my heart because I lived here when I was 10 years old before moving to Canada at 13. This trip was quite spontaneous (my partner and I booked a one-way trip), but I badly needed a change of scenery so it had to happen.
I’ve had lots of ups and downs lately as you'd expect in the self-employment world.
I’m going through a scary situation which I would like to talk about in this newsletter.
How I Used a Scary Situation to Give Me Clarity
As of last week, I have no incoming income from freelancing.
If you remember from my last newsletter, I let go of one of my clients, and the other one recently told me that they have no upcoming projects for me.
*Cue panic mode as a freelancer 😳*
But to be honest, I'm not rushing to go and get more new clients.
Here are the two main reasons:
I want to train my brain to believe that I'd be okay even if I had no money coming in for a specific period of time.
I want to stop associating my core identity with the things that make me money. (i.e. I'm a nurse or I'm a freelance writer)
In short, I want to get to know who I am deeper without worrying about money. (Obviously, this is something I can do right now but not forever. I recognize how privileged I am to do this.)
So I vlogged my thoughts, behaviors, and actions for a week.
Doing this experiment has helped me understand something crucial about myself.
Writing and making YouTube videos bring me a lot of joy. But they don't inspire me when they are my primary sources of income.
And for that reason, I've decided to pursue contract nursing work. It's kinda like freelancing but in the nursing world.
I don't want to create or sell digital products with monetary motives. I want to show up online for free as much as possible. By getting my sources of income from somewhere else, I can put a lot more inspired energy into the projects I'm doing.
And when I do sell, I want to make sure they're awesome products and services. Not because I need the money.
So if you're experiencing a situation you're not entirely happy with, ask yourself, “How can I embrace this situation and make decisions that are soulfully good for me?”
🧚 3 Fairy Tips for Multipassionate Creators
Don't try to become a writer. Just write. [On Writing] When I started writing online, I'd never considered myself a writer. Even with 100+ written articles online, I still don’t truly consider myself a writer. In my head, I'm just a girl who loves to write, and therefore I'll keep writing until I no longer can. (Source)
Give things for free. [On Making Money] There's a girl on Twitter and Medium who I'm secretly jealous of, and her name is Niharikaa. She's growing insanely on Twitter and LinkedIn. And she's one of the reasons I pushed myself to launch the digital workbook last month. But her strategy for making money online is to give lots of things for free. She has multiple free products where she's earned over $100+. I've done this before, so I know it works. (Source)
Stop trying to make sense of your life for other people. [On Life] You don't have to be neatly packaged in a way that other people understand. You can do many things at once, and you don't people’s validation to understand you. (Source)
